Top Ten Annuals for Cut Flower Arrangements

Sandy has been creating fresh cut flower arrangements for decades. Here she shares her favorite annuals to plant and then bring their beauty indoors. Note on care: Make sure your vase is clean, trim stems at a 45-degree angle for water absorption. Use cool water and add flower food. Change the water every 2 to 3 days and re-cut the stems. Keep your arrangements away from any heat source such as direct sunlight. Most cut flowers last up to 2 weeks unless otherwise noted. Remember to remove the lower leaves so they don't sit in the water.

Dahlias: Say something large flowers with bold colors or muted elegance. Dahlias last from 3 to 7 days with the button shaped flower lasting the longest.

Zinnias: Lots of color options, bold globe-shape and varied heights with sturdy stems.

Rudbeckia: 'Amarillo Gold' offers 5" flowers, 'Pawnee Spirit' has big brown eyes and 'Glowing' is perfect for Autumn. The perennial version "doesn't make the cut"!

Coleus: There are a number of options in both color and height. Their leaves are a perfect compliment to any flower. These cuttings will grow roots in the water which you can then plant.

Gerbera Daisies: These cheery daisies are some of the longest lasting in a vase. Their sturdy stems supporting them. They like water, keep it fresh.

Mums: So many color options. These make great accent flowers to surround and highlight the main showstopper.

Snapdragons: All on their own these are excellent in vases. Lots of color varieties and heights.

Gladiolas: With their frilly petals and lovely color, they are very often used as the main feature. Flowering from the bottom up it makes it easy to pull out the spent blooms and trim the stem to keep the flowers coming.

Gypsophila aka Baby's Breath: A dainty filler adding an airy quality to every arrangement. It's often used fresh or dried!

Asters: This annual aster, sometimes called China Aster, is another great accent. Their compact daisy-like flowers and small leaves add texture.
