Growing and Caring for Astilbe Plants

Astilbe (a-stil' be) are a great, versatile perennial for either shade or sun. They are most often considered for shade because of the vibrant colors that their plumes provide and they do prefer being shaded from afternoon sun. Flower colors include reds, pinks, whites, and lavender. Each variety seems to take on its own flower plume shape from either the elongated, airy look of the 'Visions' Astilbe or the compact look of the 'Fanal'. Various varieties of Astilbe grow from 10 inches up to 49 inches. Foliage is also varied from light greens to dark, shiny to dull, deep cut serrations to shallow. They bloom from July to August.

Growing conditions:

  • Part shade is optimum but they can also be planted in the sun if they don’t have to bear the brunt of the afternoon sun.
  • They can handle a semi-wet environment around ponds and pools.
  • Plant in fertile soil that is high in organic matter and well draining.
  • Adding peat moss to the soil increases drainage and adds organic matter to the soil.
  • While they don’t like to be overwatered, the DO need more moisture than other perennials. If soils dry out the foliage may curl and scorch during the hot summer.

Additional tips:

  • Plant 18 to 24 inches apart
  • Plant in spring or fall.
  • Astilbe need to be divided every 3 to 4 years at the crown in early spring.
