Description

Summer Sky Ageratum is one of the few truly blue annual flowers available and it absolutely shines in the summer garden! The incredibly rich blue flower clusters are made up of tiny pom poms with feathery petals. Plants form densely flowering, very long blooming, compact bushes about 1½-2 feet tall, providing rich garden color right up until frost. A wide range of pollinators and especially butterflies love visiting these flowers, and serendipitously both deer and rabbits avoid them!

Ageratum houstonianum. Frost tender

Plant after frost danger is over and temperatures are above 50°F(10°C) day and night. Sow seeds in rich, well-drained soil in a well-worked seedbed in full sun, 2 inches apart. Press seeds into the soil; barely cover and firm soil for good contact. Keep evenly moist; germination takes 7-15 days.

Sow seeds 1 inch apart in containers of seed starting mix 6 to 8weeks before last expected frost. Barely cover and firm soil for good contact. Keep moist and warm at 75-80°F (24-27°C) and provide a strong light source until seedlings are established. Transplant after gradually acclimating to outdoor conditions.

Wait until the weather is warm and settled and seedlings are well developed and can be handled easily. Thin or transplant seedlings 10 to 12 inches apart in rich, well-drained soil. Keep young seedlings evenly moist.

Long blooming Ageratum can handle hot weather. Water consistently and be sure plants have good air circulation to avoid fungal diseases. Clusters of sky-blue flowers provide ample food and nectar for diverse pollinators. When plants finish initial bloom, cut them back for rebloom within a week or two. Happily, deer and rabbits usually ignore these pretty plants!
