October Quick Tips

  • Start preparing your vegetable garden for winter. Piling 12 or more inches of shredded leaves and straw on root crops will allow harvesting throughout much of the winter.
  • Pot up and bring in or cut and hang for drying any herbs you want to save for winter use.
  • Set aside a pile of shredded leaves to mulch your beds once the ground freezes.
  • Now is the time to apply Gertens’ Winterizer to your lawn.
  • Make a dried arrangement with some of your great garden plants - hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, milkweed pods, Baptisia pods, Russian sage etc.
  • As the nighttime temperatures start to dip towards the low 40s, move your tropical plants indoors.
  • Once the ground temperature becomes cooler (mid-October), it is safe to plant your hardy bulbs.
