I was very excited to hear we were going to design, build, and feature some outdoor kitchens. As a designer that meant I got to plan 6-8 different concepts with at least as many different materials. We were allocated a space that was not living up to its potential and converted it into eight sections.

Conceptual ideas for the Gertens Outdoor rooms were reached by meeting with each vendor and figuring out how to showcase their favorite product while still capturing our client’s interest. This of coarse was one of my favorite parts of the project. Placing patterns into a stone floor or retaining wall planter, similar to a rug, was new and unusual. I am not sure the installation crew liked it as much as we did. One of the more difficult challenges was accounting for two opposing grades that needed to be addressed in order to get to eight level and usable spaces.

Each room was designed using complimentary materials; color and style of paving, retaining wall, furniture, pergolas, and plant material were all coordinated to achieve the final effect. For instance, the Valder’s room showcases a cool Mediterranean look with light colored stone and billowy grasses accented by dark purple & green specimen plants, and comfortable patterned furniture. It’s a must see…..Which one is your favorite…I’d love to know.
