Gertens Guide to Tree Pruning

Experts at the University of Minnesota Extension agree that pruning is a necessary way to control the growth of a plant, promote flowering, eliminate hazards and encourage plant health.

It is important to prune trees at the proper time. Most trees should be pruned in late dormant season, February thru early April. This is before the spring growth starts and it leaves only a short amount of time before the wound starts to heal itself. Some trees have a specific time to be pruned: To avoid spreading oak wilt, prune oaks in April thru May; make sure to prune crabapples, mountain-ash, hawthorns and shrub cotoneasters when dormant in late winter, as pruning in the spring or summer can encourage the spread of fireblight; stem cankers can be spread if honeylocust trees are pruned in the summer months, pruning should be done when dormant in late winter.

Having the right tools can make pruning more efficient and less damaging to the plant. The tools should be maintained with sharp blades and proper safety equipment.
